I think I planted mine 3-4 inches down but if planting now you need to protect them from frost so I'd suggest heaping another 6-9 inches of compost over the top of your final "ground level" and then carefully spreading it out in a few months after danger of frost has gone (but if you forget to spread it out the hops will probably cope just fine).

Well I`m glad to say, I`ve just remembered to check my hops after their holiday in the GreenHouse, and guess what out of the 8 plants I have, at least 5 of them have started growing \:D/

Ah this reminds me. I really need to re-pot my hops with some fresh compost! I'd completely forgotten about them.
