I know, we're all doomed! Glad you feel better! Amazing how i 'forget' how much hops i have when i see another offer. Too many hop shortage memories.

I'm a pig in mud for the common hops these days courtesy of work. But its always tempting to try new stuff ;)

What do you do when you need to use part of a pack. i.e. you have 100g foil vac packed in the freezer and you want to use say half of it. Do you open whilst frozen, cut off (with knife?) and defrost desired amount, repack the rest and return to freezer? (or throw in the rest and be done with it :=P )

I am new to all grain so have just stocked up. After using 100g of Amarillo, I have:

Bobek
Fuggles
Northdown
Cascade
Goldings

Just open them, no need to defrost as they break off really easy, I have a vac packer so I just seal them up again but before I had the vac packer I just folded the bag over and put them in a sealed tub back in the freezer.

I don't see the need to freeze hops that are already vac packed(unless the loos the vac seal). i only freeze once a pack is opened and then they go in a plastic tub and in the freezer.

When i freeze my hops i break them down into 30g chunks then i place each chunk into a Zip sealed freezer bag. This way when it comes to boiling up the wort
i take what ever i need out of the sealed bags and put the freezer bag back into the freezer when iam finished. This method works real well for me. I have added a couple of new hop's to my arsenal like Mouteka, Pecfic gem both of these hops have realy impressed me.I was wondering if any body has used Hallatu Aroma ? if so what did you think? was the vanilla flavour present in your ale? caus every where i have read about this hop this vanilla flavour has always been mentioned.

Looking at the formulas for calculating the degradation of hop alpha it is the temperature that the hops are stored that has the greatest effect of the rate at which it is lost. Actually the sort of bag it's in seems to make much less of a difference (presumably that has more effect on the retention of aroma - which is more volatile)

OK following the demise of my hop freezer last winter, and not being allowed to store the hops in the indoor freezers, I have just cleared the hops store of all the old hops (2.5kg fuggles, 1 Kg Golding, I kg Progress, 1 Kilo Bobek, 500g Saaz B, 500g Pacific Gem plus assorted Blocks of Target, Mittelfruh)

Tough job, but they were old and have not been stored optimally all year . . . . So I bought myself a new freezer . . . and She hasn't seen it yet . . . plus while down at Phil's I did a bit of bargaining and now my hops store contains

500g Home grown Fuggles from 2009
500g Nelson Sauvin
100g Bramling Cross
180g Southern Cross
1Kg Goldings
1Kg Fuggles
1Kg Bobek
1Kg Hallertau Mittelfruh

Plus a few odds and sods worth keeping

So I should be fine for a few beers this year . . . . .

. . . . As a 'bonus' the aroma coming out of the Organic waste recycling bin is something else

It's true, I didnt believe it at 1st, I just moved into the 2nd drawer of our 3 drawer freezer.
I'm now in the market for a cheap freezer for the shed , where the rest of my brewing related gear/practices take place.
