tribs,

I'd say I'm in the same position as you. I was later than most getting going. Plus the shock of spending a week in the post didn't help matters. But after a couple of weeks they kicked into life. I'd say they're about a foot now. I think I'll try some tomato feed in them to help them along.

Oops, forgot to mention, I have mine in large pots, as I'm still trying to put a bit of shape on the back garden, so I'm not expecting as big a growth this year. Hopefully have a nice sunny position sorted out for next spring. (The plan is to grow them up the wall of the shed, but the shed is currently a hole in the ground and a pile of blocks  )

Just thought I'd check in and see how everybodys plants are doing.

Mine are looking good now, well established, still only about 4-5 ft but growing about an inch a day and filling out. Anyone with signs of flowers or cones yet?

Mine grew like crazy over early summer (fnarr fnarr :D ), covering a fence.... unfortunately no flowers have emerged and the leaves are dieing quite seriously :( I'm not sure I'll get any hop cones this year :(

yeah, some of the leaves on mine are looking a bit ropey. These plants need *lots* of water!

I was watering them heavily every day... until I went on holiday for a week.. then another holiday later.. I guess this is why they look so ill :( All the other plants in the garden are doing fine, include the tomatoes, so it must be the plants rather than my gardening skills)

Does anyone think these would grow in Scotland or would I be wasting my time? Maybe I could grow them under the stairs with a flourescent light... :bonk

I've just noticed two small flowers/cones amongst the dieing plants - perhaps I'll have enough to dry hop a miniture of homebrew this year

Hello Mysterio the craig mill brewery in strathaven was growing fuggle hops some years ago. Also some members in the scottish craft brewers grow hops with some success. But seems to be Fuggles does better in our climate Cheers.

A mate of mine planted a hop plant about three years ago and this year it's gone crazy. It's currently full of big hop cones and I asked him to check the variety, turns out it's First Gold and he's keen that I use them for brewing :D

Rock! :pink

He said that in year one there were hardly any cones, quite a few in yr 2 and now loads....

Looks like my 2006 hop harvest will be three cones!

Picked one this week and dried it - just rolled/crushed the dried cone on my hands and the hop aroma is nice and.....hoppy! :D

Apparently it takes a year or two for the plants to produce a proper harvest so hopefully next years batch will be plentiful.
