Challenger and Cascade hops together?
Challenger and Cascade hops together?
Hi all,
I am going to make the summer lightning clone from Graham Wheeler's book and I was hoping to be able to use Challenger for the bittering and Cascade for the aroma hops (instead of Goldings per recipe). I was just wondering if anybody has used this hop combination before and if it is something special or not? I was told that cascade is a powerful aroma hop and I certainly want a strong hoppy beer so it sounds good, unless others know better?
Thanks!
BTW: just got a bargain at my local brewery so looking to brew something golden/summery tomorrow:
25Kg low colour marris otter malt - £20
100g Cascade
200g Challenger
200g Broadicea - All 3 bags for a total of £7.50

Re: Challenger and Cascade hops together?
If you use challenger and cascade instead of goldings you aren't going to end up with summer lightning, that said i think i'd certainly enjoy it (love challenger and cascade).
Nice prices on the hops and grains

Re: Challenger and Cascade hops together?
Thanks delboy
I really wantedto use "summer lightning" to mean a a nice golden hoppy ale as I don't mind if it doesn't taste exactly like it
Never used Cascade before so i think I will give it a whirl, using the same amount of Cascade as I would use Goldings, even if Cascade is meant to have more aroma. Or should I cut down on the amount of Cascade?

Sounds "Lovely Jubbly" Jubby!
I assume using the same quantity of low colour marris otter pale malt as opposed to the normal colour malt makes no difference (apart from the colour of course!)?

Re: Challenger and Cascade hops together?
I use that combination often-I grow my own Challenger and I just love Cascade. You'll enjoy!!!
Re: Challenger and Cascade hops together?
Sorry to hijack this thread huys, but it fits my question pretty much spot on. Basically, would there be a significant change in falvour from using challenger as the bittering hop with cascade or amarillo as flavour/aroma, as opposed to using the cascade or amarillo for all three? I love both the amaeican hops, but looking at a way to make them go further, but I don't want to compromise on taste. So would I lose any fruity/tangy/zesty/citrusy[add as applicable
] tones by using challenger or boadicea, or indeed any other bittering hop?

Re: Challenger and Cascade hops together?
To echo what others have said, it won't taste like Summer Lightening but you'll end up with a taty brew. Hereis my take on the challenger / cascade combo
