Perle = uch, discuss

Post by delboy » Thu Aug 13, 2009 2:59 pm

Any beer i've brewed using perle has suffered from a terrible piney acidic harsh bitterness, i've come across this in my numerous attempts to clone SNPA.
With perle = bad tasting (tastes almost like a low level acetobacter infection mixed with pine) without = smooth tasting goodness.

Has anyone else noticed this with perle?

I've heard this mentioned on other forums too, are we homebrewers just getting some 'bad shit' I wonder ? I doubt commercial breweries would use it if the harsh character had to be aged out.

I'd thought the same thing myself mysty, the 'orrible' tasting perle beers i've had have all come from the same packet of hops (gold foil) i have another packet of hops from barley bottom that i haven't used yet, i might make a hop tea from them and see if i get the same nasty taste from them also.

It's more minty than piney in my experience, and not acidic at all. Reminds me of Northern Brewer.

I agree that it leaves an aftertaste...not quite unpleasant, but certainly not pleasant, just a taste that really shouldn't be there..it reminds me of freshly mown grass.

To get rid of my Perle, I am using small quantities mixed with other hops as bittering hops (Has a high IBU) in most of my bres..Not enough to taste. and it means I use less of my "nice" hops.

P.S Mine were from Barley Bottom....so I think it is a Hop thing.
