Pilot Hops

Post by jonnyhop » Fri Sep 18, 2009 5:19 pm

I have some pilot hops – 7.0% sitting in my freezer from a bulk buy of a guy on e-bay. Any ideas what they taste like or what to do with them?

Cheers

Jonny

I've just used some in a batch so can let you know in a couple of weeks!

PS. I had some brilliant results using Herkules in an IPA :)

racked the pilot beer to secondary and had a taste. Nice aroma but very bitter.
Hope I've not overdone it! I'm sure they will mellow-early days yet.

What was your recipie?

I was thinking of using 80g as a bittering hop, 20g with a few other hops from the freezer for aroma and sticking it in the corni for a couple of months for a 6% ish, high hop IPA.

So what didn't you like about the Pilot and Bravo Mysterio? There isn't much information on them available on the web (that I can find). What I made a note of is below in case it is helpful to anybody else

Bravo
Apparantly not much aroma? Primarily bittering hop.
Pilot
Very new high alpha hedgerow variety hop It Has A good aroma and alpha properties

Something like this...but I haven't quite got the hang of Beer Engine yet! It seems to come up with strange mash and total volumes!

Anyway, this is what I did and got an OG of 1.062

Fermentable Colour lb: oz Grams Ratio
Caramalt 30 EBC 0 lbs. 8.8 oz 250 grams 4.8%
Crystal Malt, Pale 60 EBC 0 lbs. 8.8 oz 250 grams 4.8%
Pale Malt 5 EBC 9 lbs. 14.6 oz 4500 grams 86.5%
Amber Malt 60 EBC 0 lbs. 7.0 oz 200 grams 3.8%

Pilot Whole 11.5 % 60 mins 15grams
Liberty Whole 4 % 30 mins 10grams
Willamette Whole 4.7 % 30 mins15grams

Final Volume: 20 Litres
Original Gravity: 1.062

Tasted last night and it is getting better!

I just didn't think much of the quality of the Glacier hops I got from the same supplier. For all I know the Pilot and Bravo are perfectly fine

I got bag of Glacier & Herkules from the same EBay guy I think.
I wasn't to impressed by the Herkules when I opened them. If somone wants my un-opened or Glacier's or opened Herkules, you too can have them!

mixed review from me for the same ebay seller.

I used his Bravo + glacier in a APA (with cascade from my LHBS) and it the resulting beer had a cheesy feet smell/taste that took a very long time to disappear (and it definitely was not the Cascade's fault as I reused Cascade from the same bag in another brew which had no cheesy feet smell)
I used Pilot in an single hopped pale ale and the leaves were quite brown. The resulting beer was much more bitter than I would have expected based on the %AA. Also in terms of aroma it didn't do much for me. MIldly herbal is the only word I can find to describe it.

I also used Styrian and Liberty from the same seller and they were fine.

The Glacier I used weren't cheesy, they had that kind of neutral, hay-like smell you get from old hops. They didn't seem to have any impact on the final beer. Ah well, you pays your money.

Yep, i too have a bag of Glacier that just smells very unusual.

I haven't bothered using them other than trying to make my 5yr old smell them with the hope of making him sleepy!

The Herkules however gave a very good result in an IPA. Liberty have also been fine.

Glad i checked on here before ordering. I was going to go for a KG of Mount Hood and a KG of Glacier. He tells me the pilot hops are from the 05 harvest. Am i better off not bothering then if there are issues? Any update on ther hops, you guys used them since last posts?
