Alpha Correction

Post by chris_reboot » Thu Oct 08, 2009 10:18 pm

Just been inputting my next few brews into beer engine, then re-calculated the recipes to account for the actual AA% on the packets of hops I've bought as they are different to the beer engine defaults.

So, fair enough, some more, some less, that's fine.

My question is this:
If I'm upping the 90min hops by say 20% to account for AA correction, do I also apply the same to 15min or 0min hops as they are there for aroma, not bitterness?

I feel I could be missing out on aroma if I'm using less than the recipe states if my AA% is higher than normal?

thanks Chris, but not quite sure what you mean? :-k
resetting defaults will surely put the hop AA%'s back to Grahams defaults.

What I meant was probably more the 0min or dry hopping hops especially.

I should have thought really that the 15min hops are essentially the same as the 90min ones from the regard of AA% utilisation, (ie. factor up or down based on actual AA, rather than beer engine's defaults).

So, really the question is, do I use hops as per recipe or AA correct that for the late/dry hops. It can be around 25% difference in quanities so I don't want to be down on aroma for instance.
