Wintering in a Pot, how wet or dry should it be?

Post by WishboneBrewery » Sun Oct 11, 2009 3:35 pm

I have my hop plants in large planters (approx 30-40 Litre plastic fake terracotta).
I've just cut back my Fuggle to a few inches above ground level, I can see the budded growth that will hopefully sprout out next year. I've heaped up some Fresh compost over all this so there is a couple of inches covering them, I'm not sure how moist I should keep the pot through the winter, I don't want it to be too wet and the frost get at it and I assume too dry and it would die off totally???

I can keep my pots covered under my staging, if needed, to protect them from frost :)

Mine have survived OK totally neglected - cut down to a couple of inches above the soil, and ignored all winter - but they are in the ground, not in pots.

I suppose soil in the ground does stay pretty damp.
Hmm :)

I can't really put mine in the ground until next year when we move house, and I need to plan where they are going to grow.
