Liberty - really a sub?
Liberty - really a sub?
AM planning a Weizen in the New Year, nothing fancy just 55% pale, 45% wheat and probably a couple of packets of Danstar Munich yeast.
I just happened to have 50g of Liberty hops in the freeze - do they really make a good sub for the traditional Hallertau? Therfore, could i use them in this beer? Or better to go traditional (Saaz, Hallertauer, Tettnanger etc)?
cheers

Re: Liberty - really a sub?
They are different to the trad hops but I think they'd work quite nicely in a Weizen. It's not usually a hop-dominated style anyway (I have had Hopfen Weisse on draught that was pretty incredible though - an 8.5% Wheat IPA - a joint brew with Schneider in Germany and Brooklyn from the US).

Love the Liberty, if you dont try you and US will never know, what have you to loose. is a Vin Vin Vin situation.

Will do guys - I've had that Schneider-Brooklyner Wheat too, it was v nice, different - although i couldnt drink a lot of it. Lots of bubblegummy aromas on the nose.

Where do you get it from?steve_flack wrote:(I have had Hopfen Weisse on draught that was pretty incredible though - an 8.5% Wheat IPA - a joint brew with Schneider in Germany and Brooklyn from the US).
Is it just an over-hopped Schneider Weisse? Would be nice and easy to get the yeast

Re: Liberty - really a sub?
ALright mate - in case you're interested -I bought mine from Beer-Ritz in Headingley - but it was last may. Here's my post about it on my blog -
http://goodpeopleeats.blogspot.com/2008 ... lyner.html
It was interesting, really interesting - not so muc over-hopped, just a really fruity, bubblegummy flavour. Very sweet. Basically what happened was the guys from Brooklyn and the guys from Schneider swapped breweries and brewed a wheat beer using each others ingreidents. It's since popped up on tap at North in Leeds, but i have not seen it anywhere else - and doubt that I will.

I got it on draught at The Rake in Borough, London a few weeks ago. It's a fair bit stronger than Schneider Weiss and quite pale and cloudy with a big load of US hops in it.pdtnc wrote: Where do you get it from?

Re: Liberty - really a sub?
Sounds disgusting, I have to say!
Mind you i'm not a fan of the Brooklyn products... haven't tried one of their beers that I liked. Couldn't even finish the IPA
Liberty is great in wheat beers, lemony and spicy.

I hate Brooklyn Brewery, never had one that I liked, but I haven't tried them all.
However, I do love Schneider. Schneider Hopfen is amazing, so wonderfully hoppy. 2 kettle additions of Hallertauer Tradition, Aroma and dry hops are Hallertauer Saphir. No American hops.
Pretty expensive though
Edit: Blah! Just looked up the Brooklyn version of Hopfen, it sounds all wrong: Willamette, Cascade, Palisade, Amarillo.
Weird mix.
Their regular weisse looks pretty good, it just uses Hallertauer Perle.
Edit: Perhaps Leigh is right (below), it gets 98 on Rate Beer and A- on Beer Advocate.

Sommeliers recommend that you swirl a glass of wine and inhale its bouquet before throwing it in the face of your enemy.

I'd say....if any of you get a chance to try, do. It's an odd beer but interesting nontheless. Not something i'd want to recreate, though.
