Propogating hops

Post by BathTub » Wed Oct 20, 2010 8:14 pm

Hello their,

Can anyone confirm the process of propogating hops, i have spoken to a few old boys down the allotment and their ideas vary considerably. i was on the understanding that once you have havested your crop you cut the old bines back to 2-3 feet. Cover them with soil and in the spring dig them up and you should have new rizhomes?

I am watching this with interest. My allotment didn't get a huge amount of use this year so I am thinking of growing some hops next year, once I work out how.

Hi Ive got a northdown plant, which has given me a good crop this year, I will cut back and then protect the roots from frost, it should start to grow again next spring
no palate, no patience.

Not sure about covering them (not tried it though)

What I have done was take rihzome cuttings,
about as long as your finger, with at least a few buds on,
These can be potted or replanted

Or cut early season shoot tips off, remove a few lower leaves and then leave in some water, in the green house (saw it on JBK some where)
They soon start growing roots and they can then be potted

From experience the rihzome cuttings seem to be a stronger plant from the outset, where as the shoot cuttings will take a few years to get going

Good luck

Best way is to either layer or take rhizome cuttings. You take a long shoot (5 foot or so), and lay it down on the floor. Cover it with soil, and the shoot should root itself - helps a little if you can peg the shoot down too. Dig it up when it has enough roots and transplant - you can quickly get a lot of plants doing this.

When cutting back for the year, I tend to wait for all the foliage to die back, and then trim it down to floor level (not far off now we've had a couple of frosts). It'll come right back next year (you'll need to restrict the number of growing shoots to get the best growth - I landed up with 20-30 shoots this year which I had to keep pinching out.

do i lay these shoots down at the start of the growing season or bines at the end of the season, than dig them up in spring the following year?

Pardon me for jumping into your thread...

Can you grow hops from seeds? Would the seeds in the dried hops you buy work?
How do you use home grown hops? Do you need to dry them first or can you use them fresh?

You can grow hops from seeds but you don't know what hop you are getting, you can buy hop rizhones (roots) of what ever hop you want i.e progress, goldings, fuggles. You can use the hops fresh or dry, i've use fresh for the Murphys clone but my next brew will be dried.

Hop this helps Charlie
