Post by leedsbrew » Sun Jan 30, 2011 7:33 pm

I'm off to Florida in April and was wondering if there is any problem with bringing vac pack hops back either in carry on or in hold luggage? some of the US online store prices are just so cheap! :D

Be prepared for this...

Seriously though, I cannot see a problem as they are not food stuffs but I would prepare myself for a long wait at customs.

You should be fine. I've brought hops and liquid yeasts back from the US a few times in hand luggage with no problems. Of course, they do look rather like weed, so make sure they are properly labelled and you have receipts in case you do get questioned by paranoid security staff. Be prepared to be all gushing about how good US hops are and you just can't get the same quality in the UK. While BS, yanks do tend to like beer and compliments on American stuff..... I can also confirm that security x-ray machines don't hurt the hops, or kill liquid yeast.

put them in your checked luggage and you dont have to worry at all. Check out http://www.hopsdirect.com/ if you can order ahead of time or will be here long. It takes about two weeks to delivery from there.

Just happend to watch the last 10 mins of UK border force on sky last night, a chap from an africa country tried to bring in 2 massive bag fulls of locusts, apparetnly they are a delicacy.
Another women from Turkey tried to get through customs with a load of mince meat!
