Added hops sachet too late?

Post by DrunkenMonkey87 » Mon Feb 07, 2011 2:39 pm

Hi there all, my name is Pete, and im fairly new too home brewing. I originally bought a youngs brew buddy lager started kit which contains all basic equipment and a can of youngs lager malt to get me going. So far i have brewed the youngs lager kit, and a john bull lager kit. I am now currently brewing some Tom Caxton Real Ale as i am getting a bit sick of the taste of lager after getting through nearly 80 pints recently! Had a bit of a slip up regarding the hops sachet. I forgot to add the sachet until after id topped up the wort with cold water to the 25 litre mark in the fermentation container. Ive started putting the fermentation container in a bath of hot water to get it to a warmer temperature before adding the yeast, so after half an hour or so in the bath i remembered about the hops and added them. The method i used was emptying the sachet into a cup and adding boiling water, i then stirred and left for 10mins before adding too the brew, later adding the yeast. Have i completely ruined my first batch of Real Ale? #-o

No it's hard to ruin it unless you;ve infected stuff.

I usually dry hop after primary fermentation is over - stick the tea bag in the barrel for a week or so

Welcome to the forum, matey.

Your hops thing is fine but do keep an eye on the fermentation temperature. Ideally you don't want the temperature much above 20C so be careful with the "bath of hot water" thing

Oh thankyou both :) what a relief, thought i may have ruined the whole batch. I am a bit OCD with making sure everything is sufficiently sterilised so hopefully all should be fine on that front too. Im planning on bottling next monday so it would have had 1 week primary fermentation by then (obviously i'll check the hydrometer reading first)...

I'll keep you posted!
