Hallertau Hersbrucker - AA + Flavours

Post by Kp2 » Tue Mar 08, 2011 3:38 pm

Here's a quick dum question for a sunny afternoon.

I have Hallertau Hersbrucker at 6.6% aa. But I need Hallertau Hersbrucker at 2.0% aa.

At 2.0% aa, I will need 58g in 23L (for the bittering 90min). So after the ajustment ( 2/6.6)*58 = 17.57g.

I know I will get the bittering, but the question is what about the other flavours ?

Less mass would less flavour ? Any thoughts anyone ? Thanks for any input.

Add smaller amount at start as first wort hop (running wort onto them) to get the most flavour from the bittering charge, add at 10 minutes from end for flavour/aroma checking on IBU additions and then chuck the remaining weight in either at flame out/end of boil and steeped for half hour as aroma hops which will contribute a negligable amount of bitterness (no rolling boil to move them around) but all the aroma.

What's the OG etc

Cheers for that LancsSteve. Reading back it looks like I forgotten the (very) basic understanding of hops use. Ended up just throwing in the ajusted bittering amount anyway. Why the problems? different text in clone Brews 1st compeared to 2nd copy and failing to read right. And then I started to think, Um :? And then the cry for help.
The beer was BarBar and OG 1.080 ish. And the whole house smells like a beehive, but at 2:00am this morning, no wife to tell me off.
Next time I will have a go at changing the hops times. Spread it out a bit more to get a "balanced bittering" effect in the first 30min.

90min batch 22l
UK Lager 71%
UK Wheat 6.6%
Cara-Hells 3.3%
Light crystal 2.2%
Honey 6.6%
Candi 6.6%
Hersbrucker 3 hbu or 12g at 6aa rather than 17g at 4aa

15min
Curacao 0.74 g/l
Coriander 0.74 g/l
Honey 3.4 %
Styrian Goldings 14g not ajusted because it's a flavour. Um, the penny drops again!

5min
Coriander 0.19 g/l

Bottling, Lots more Honey 2.5g per 500ml and Abbey ale 1214 thought out 20c.
