Wild Hops, is it to late to take cuttings?

Post by Sye » Tue Jul 05, 2011 7:08 pm

Hi, while out on a walk I spotted two places where wild hops are growing.

Is it to late in the year to take some cuttings from these and what would be the best way about it? They are growing in fairly inaccessible areas so I would not be able to get to the bases of the plants :(

You'd be better off grabbing hold of a bine and try to pull up a piece of root. Plant that, and it should take, without too much problem.

Otherwise, keep an eye out for other plants. Now that you've found a couple, you'll probably come across more.

Blackaddler is right, unless you can get a decent amount of root with the bine I wouldn't bother for this year. If it's local to where you live make a note and go back for it next Spring. You could always leave it til September and then pull it down and have some lovely hops to brew with. Otherwise you might lose the lot if you try and replant it now.

Can't be arsed to keep changing this bit, so, drinking some beer and wanting to brew many more!

Well, I don't reckon I'll be able to get to the root system, so I'll head back around September and try to harvest the hops then. I have found two spots now where hops are growing both within walking distance.

Once the hop cones start forming, next month, you'll probably spot quite a few more plants.

I can't see any harm in taking a couple of cuttings and seeing if you can get them to root. It's not going to significantly damage the plant, but obviously root cuttings in autumn would be ideal.

I'm not a gardener but will hops take from cuttings there quite sappy stems? Certainly propogating from the roots is best. An alternative would be to take some of the cones and plant the seeds. The chances are the wild hop will be self sown and generations away from the original hop anyway. I've got a hop in the garden and we get hop plans springing up like weeds everywhere, so growing from seed shouldn't be difficult.

As hops are part of / close to the sage family, I cant see why a cutting will not root ok.
While the plant is fruiting is not the best conditions, but with a bit of tlc you should be good.
I used to grow a lot of 'sage' plants many years ago and always took cuttings from a good mother plant for my harvests.

I can't get at the root system  so I'll wait and harvest the hops when they are ready. I did try and take a cutting or two, one is sat in a glass of water with a bit of babybio and one is in compost in a pot in the garden, but both seem to be dead now.

babybio is horrible stuff.
a bit of rooting powder or rooting gell and potted up in a weak compost in seed trays. Put 1/2 a 2litre pop bottle over them to increase humidity and they should take ok.

I'll have a go at that Geezah, I'll get some rooting powder and take cuttings from all three places I have found hops, might even get more than one variety that way.

Well out of maybe 6 rough cuttings (ripped from the bine) I think two have caught as there is a small amount of new growth on each, the others look a bit wilted and had it but will leave them alone just in case.

You should cut off the big leafs, they suck too much water. Keep em in humid box by spraying / misting water, it will take the nitrogen out witch in bad for rooting. Hops are relative to hemp and you can find a lot of information how to clone plants. There is two ways: clean and dirty ( dirty way tests how strong they are, just rumor.. )

It will take 3 years to get it productive size so i think it wont matter when you plant it. Don´t give too much fertilizer in beginning or it wont grow proper strong roots. I got last year some pieces of roots from really old plants just before frost came and most of them started this spring just fine.

Well one cutting took, so all in all a success, it's grown quite slow in a pot and is about 1 meter high, I'll try and post a photo on here soon.

Thx for everyone's help, with a bit o luck we should have a wild hop growing next year. :)

Is this the wrong time of year for taking cuttings then? When I take the nipper to nursery there is a garden with nice smelling hops climbing over the fence. I knocked on the door today and the owner said I could take as many as I wanted, which was nice. I was thinking about taking a cutting too.
