Identifiying hops by photo is nigh on impossible. Many varieties look similar depending on the conditions but if you know the following it can be narrowed down a little... but not alot. And certainly won't give a definitive answer.

Are the ones in the picture dried or straight off the bine?
Are they purpose planted or just happen to be there?
What colour is the bine?
Do the cone's appear to be tightly packed and robust or are they lighter and come apart easy.
Do the laterals break easy?

Ah - thanks. Looks like it might be a challenge to identify them then! I've added some responses...

Are the ones in the picture dried or straight off the bine? - Straight off the bine
Are they purpose planted or just happen to be there? - Not sure. They were already in the garden when he moved in.
What colour is the bine? Green
Do the cone's appear to be tightly packed and robust or are they lighter and come apart easy. The latter
Do the laterals break easy? Nope. Quite a bit of yanking and they are still in tack!

Thanks for helping

OK. Narrowed down a little.
Definitely aroma hops.
The difference in cone size could indicate a Fuggles, they are generally tougher than a Golding or Bramling. But really can't be certain.

Sorry its not a definitive answer but as I said, it is not easy to indentify without seeing the whole plant and even then you won't know for sure.

Chuck em in late boil, soak or dry and you won't go too far wrong.

If you haven't picked them yet, you need to quick as they look really ripe. Otherwise they will be only good for the compost.

Thanks again

We picked a load last year which I used for a brew quite recently. I wanted to do a simple brew to bring out the hop flavour / aroma to see if they were any use. So just used pale malt and the hops. But got carried away and added 5x the quantity of hops (both the 90 min and aroma additions) to what I'd do for a regular IPA! I'm hoping a couple more weeks will help to soften the taste a little, but I'm enjoying the bitterness of them!

I should really learn the flavour of each hop, but I really enjoy malty beers so haven't got around to doing a side by side test of just fuggles / golding that I want to do...

Cheers
