I cannot find anyone with hop plants in stock!

Post by brodington » Wed Oct 26, 2011 6:29 pm

Hi there,

I'm trying to find a dwarf hop plant or rhizome that I can plant in a big pot in my garden, I cannot find anywhere online that has em in stock.

Am I looking at the wrong time? I'm sure I read somewhere that autumn was a good time to plant em so they can settle in for next spring is this right?

Also how important is direct sun to a hop plant?

Thanks for any advice.

Neil

The short answer is; yes, now is the wrong time of year.

The places I have been looking at do not make them available until March/April next year.
I buy from The Malt Miller

Some will have stock in November so you can plant out before winter. I think I bookmarked the page at work - I'll look tomorrow

I just tried to check "A Plus Hops" but their website is down. Anyone know if they are still trading?

Thats who I bought mine from last year. They sell them all year round - just checked and they aren't out of stock.

I am ordering a couple of plants today from eessentialy hops. Their postage is £10. Does anyone local to here want to come in on the order and share postage?

PS does anyone grow their hops like this rather than up a wall

They grow best up a string. Whether you put the string against a wall or out in the open doesn't make much difference, as long as the wall doesn't block the sun!

If you're using a free standing string like that, just make sure it's well supported. Apparently they can get pretty heavy. My first year cascade reached about 6-7 foot this year, but I'm expecting to run in most of the way round the perimeter of the garden next year..

I have a tree branch above that I can use and the spot will catch all the sun - :) :) :)
