Pellet Hops?

Hi i have a question about pellet hops.I was reading the other day on the malt miller that if you wanted to use pellet hops in the boil loose that you need a specialist equippment to do this, what i would like to know is does anybody know what this specialist item is? because i was thinking maybe trying to use pellet hop for the first time, i use a brupaks boiler fitted with a hop strainer would this do the job for using pelleted hops in the boil loose? does anybody know the pro's and cons of using pelleted hops and leaf hops?

I don't know any "specialist equipment", I just drop pellets into the boil then do a whirlpool before transferring to fv. Just stir and wait as the trub settles after some 20 minutes.

Thanx for the reply so all you do is stir the ale then leave it to stand for 20 mins before transfering to the f.v..That sounds alot impler than i tnought thanx very much.What about dry hopping using pellet hops? do you need a hop sock like you do when using leaf hops ? caus i was informed there go in loose and just breakdown into the yeast bed is this true or just utter crap.?

For dry hopping I'm using muslin bags with something heavy to prevent floating. Same as with whole hops.

For 20 litres brew length I'm getting about 3 litres of hot break and hop trub after boil. This can be further filtered and I'm getting about 1.5 litre of clear wort, ideal for starters or priming with krausen. Just pasteurise it and freeze.

if you use Pellets in the boil you will probably need a Mesh Hop-stopper unless you want a clogged up annoying transfer to Fermenter

Hi i have just bought i brew paks boiler which has a mesh hop strainer fitted would that do the job?

should do, so long as its nice and fine.

Sorry to hijack this post.
Do you use the same weight of hops in both forms pellet or leaf?
In other words if a recipe calls for 40g of pellet and you only had
the hops in leaf form would you still use 40g or is there a difference?

My filter blocked BAD using pellets - form a sludge at bottom and had to syphon out, beer totally cloudy at the moment.

Anyone got advice on dry hopping with pellets? Muslin or mesh bag essential? I know Rob reckons thety just fall out but anyone else got any experience?

To dry hop with pellets I find you need to chill the beer to a few degrees to get them to drop.

as above, and to quote other brewers and Hop Factors, "Chill to 4c", this lets the settle out but you'll need to rack carefully to bottling bucket. I use a TeaBall on the end of a piece of syphon tube.

Cheers, crash cooling looks necessary anyway to clear beer (forgot protafloc, d'oh) have botched a clever (i hope) scavenger with mesh filter for secondary then will be going to cornie with shortened tube so more settling cam happen there.

So how much (weight of pellets) for BIG dry hopping effect? 10, 20or 30g - when is overkill in 20l?
