Hi there - I've been beaming with pride for the past week or so, since my first ever hop plant produced its first shoot. I ordered it from Essentially Hops in March - was looking for Goldings but there wasn't any left so chose WGV as something (I thought) close to Goldings.
But having read the "least favourite hop" thread, WGV doesn't seem to have many fans. Have I made a bad choice, or will I still be able to use the hops somehow???
Is WGV really so bad?

That's good to know. Time will tell whether I get any kind of harvest in the first year, but at least they will be fresh

Six days ago I bottled a bitter that I used WGV to FWH. The only thing I'm wishing I had done different was use more.
I'm just here for the beer.

WGV is fine. It's not a nasty hop, and certainly doesn't make a beer you would mistake for infected. It's just not everyones cup of tea. I have used home grown ones and they were very good. Almost like a cross between Goldings and Fuggles (musty and fragrant).
I would say if this is the worst hop you have used then you have been lucky, as I have used far worse.

I really like WGV-combined with goldings it's a nice combination.

That's great - thanks for the reassurances guys! I've never used WGV before myself, but a cross between Goldings and Fuggles sounds superb
All I need now is for the plant to do what comes naturally, assuming that living in scotland and at 600 feet altitude isn't going to be too much of a problem...

Re: Is WGV really so bad?
Sorry to resurrect a dead thread, but I've just had a WGV SMASH, and I've realised what I don't like about it personally. It's fine for bittering, and possibly even as a flavour hop, but it's aroma to me is just like baked beans. Bleurgh.
