Fresh hop freezing?

Post by DaveK » Thu May 31, 2007 9:27 pm

Hi Guys, First posting, member and avid reader for a few weeks now. quick question I planted my hops begining of april and I know I'm getting a head of myself a little, not that the first pickngs will be vast, (3 fuggles and 3 East kent alough I lost to too rotting) but when the hops are ready for the picking do I have to dry them out to store them or can I just freeze them working on the assumption that the will store 70% water just add the apropriate amount extra to the boil (after my first fresh hop brews, which I carnt wait for)? Will the freezing brake down the hop oils or stuff in the hops and spoil them them if they arnt dried first ( I'm just hoping they are like peas and freezing keeps in the freshness).

Usually hops are dried after picking but I guess you could freeze them wet. You would need to adjust the recipes to take acount of the fact that they aren't dry though. Anyway, as they're homegrown you won't know the alpha so are best used as aroma/flavour hops.
