I have a lot of Perle - what now?

Post by BeerEagle » Sun Oct 14, 2012 8:11 pm

For the next few years I will be mainly bittering my beers with Perle.

Just vac-packed 1.6kg, kindly donated, excess to requirements, by local micro.

Maybe kick off with an SNPA clone?

Any good for a SMaSH?

It's a German noble type, so it would lack the American hop wildness and grapefruitiness in a Sierra Nevada clone, but it would likely come out more like an alt which is good too. You can experiment with it in any recipe, of course, but you'd likely want to stick with old-world German styles: pilsener, alt, Oktoberfest, weiss, etc.

It's not so noble, at least much less than Tettnanger or Hallertau Mittelfruh. In larger amounts it shows its Northern Brewer roots and might become bit tart. To me, it best fits beers with moderate bitterness. In light beers it shines with its slightly minty notes. Blond ales, light German style lagers (helles, export, pils), and as a flavour addition to stronger pale ales, that's my use of Perle. And I love this hop. :)

If I had a bunch of perle I wouldn't hesitate to bitter most any beer with it.
I'm just here for the beer.

Great for bittering, also surprisingly good for dry hopping
