Challenger or EKG hop rhizomes

Post by CestrIan » Tue Oct 16, 2012 11:32 pm

I fancy having a go at growing some hops and I think I fancy either EKG or Challenger.

I read online that this is the best time of year to take cuttings of the roots. I know it's cheeky but I wondered if anyone has any rhizome cuttings they could spare me?

Or can you point me towards a reasonable and trustworthy web site.

Rhizomes are always sold in the spring. Some garden centers may still have some potted hops plants for sale, likely on clearance.

This would be a decent time to collect some rhizomes or rooted plants from the wild. It would be near-impossible to find naturalized Challenger hops, of course, but as far as East Kent Goldings, here's a recent thread about wild hops around Kent. I realize that's many hours away from you, but you could try contacting some of the users in that thread to see if they dug enough to share...

Best time to get them in the ground is definitely at this time of year. The soil is still warm enough for them to start getting their roots down which gives them a decent head-start in spring. The real killer for hops is soggy ground. They need plenty of water but really don't like being water logged. Free draining soil, south facing if poss and plenty of manure in the autumn makes for a happy hop.

Can't help you with a root cutting though. Mine are staying undisturbed this year.
