Dry Hopping and King Keg Problem

Post by Chris The Fish » Tue Jun 19, 2007 8:55 am

A while back i dry hopped a scottish export with a slack handful of Marynka hops placed into a muslin bag, this was then kegged into my king keg top tap and left to condition.

I now have to draw off a pint before i drink it as it tastes soo bitter its undrinkable, however its only the first pint, the subsequent pints are fine.

The hop bag wasnt weighted, so i think that it may be near the surface where the top tap float is and the first pint draws off an over hopped liquid i think, has anyone else had any experience of this sort of problem?

should i be weighting my hop bag if using a top tap floaty thing?

interesting ! never thought of that , if i were you i'd just disconnect the top float and draw from the bottom. as long as youre carefull you wont get any sediment in the pint.

I turned an old King Keg into a hop-back recently the hop flavour from the trial brew is great. When i dry-hop i normally add in hop bag to the primary at the end of fermentation. I leave for three or four days warm then crash cool & leave another week. :D :D

but he is doing 200l batches  ...wonder what weight of hops go into the hopback?

No No only 110 Litres i used 125g of Styrian Goldings & 125g of Challenger. And being a frugal scotsman and don't use King Kegs anymore it cost nothing to make.  :D
