Today I spoke with his Eminence...

Post by scuppeteer » Wed Apr 03, 2013 10:51 pm

...or as some may know him... GOD!

Yes, it is true. Today I had the enormous privilege of speaking to the god of hops, Peter Darby. I am very pleased to say, that I managed to maintain my composure and didn't end up a squealing school girl, whilst we discussed the process of obtaining some non-commercial varieties from the National Hop Collection. I asked about a couple of interesting sounding varieties, including one that flowered in July... useless apparently! :(
So as it goes we have a window in May (if we get some bloody sun [-o< ) to go and collect the varieties we chose, then plant out in our experimental garden at work. 8)
As you might imagine Mr Darby has to be one of the nicest, most amenable and knowledgeable chaps I have ever spoken to. Really can't wait to meet him in person. :flip:

That's very, very cool Dave. I totally get it. Congrats and good luck in May.

Hey, did the topic of Flyer hops come up?

I'm sure he's a nice chap but I've never heard of him.
Good luck with the hops though.

He's the man to thank for many of our modern varieties, including Challenger, Flyer, Endeavour and First Gold to name but a few.

Here's Scuppeteer just after he got off the phone to Peter Darby

I think he was pressing the phone against his ear a bit hard!
