Hop buying in May

Post by jmc » Sun May 05, 2013 9:20 pm

I'm after some advice on whether to go for bare-rooted rhizomes or potted hop plants.

I know its late for getting new hops but today SWMBO asked me to get plants to cover a 10ft length of fence (after taking down old jaded honeysuckle) and she suggested hops. :D

I've heard that Prima Donna (First Gold) is good for covering fences. I want something that's got good coverage and not all top, so I'm hoping a dwarf variety, like Prima Donna would be good.

Its late in the year so some places have stopped selling hops :( , but it is still possible to buy from a couple of places
Essentially Hops
Aplus Hops

However, I noticed Willingham Nurseries, will start selling (potted) hop plants, in a week or two. I'm hoping these will have been planted earlier in the year and have some growth on them already.

So the question is...
Am I likely to get better growth this year by waiting a week or two and getting potted plants ,
Or should I order bare-rooted rhizomes now?

TIA for any advice.

Cheers John

My rhizome failed I planted last year so I plan on buying potted and giving that a go. I'd say it was too late for Rhizomes now but I'm not expert....My plant failed

I planted my EKG from a pot around this time in 2011 and its going great, from memory use manure compost and plant in well drained soil.

Don't expect much in the first year though.
