Hop Indentification

Post by Belto » Sun Sep 30, 2007 8:29 pm

My first season at growing Hops, with limited sucess 275 grms harvested.
Next season will provide it's own wires and not the hedge, it was swallowed and consumed by bindweed, and also will limit it to 3 bines.

I had this variety given to me not knowing the name.
I wonder if an experienced grower can help identify from the hop.
I have included a part of the bine also that may help

That's going to be difficult to do. Do you know that it's a genuine variety or just a wild "hedgerow" hop? You'll probably only be able to work out what it's not by the colour of the stem (how green/red is it overall), the smell of the cones, and how tastes/smells in a trial brew.

My experience is to go for a named variety from a reliable source - you'll know what you are getting and most likely get a decent crop.
