Hi, I have one of each of these hops bought approx three years ago. Both are pretty rampant, one being more vigorous than the other. The problem is I can't remember which one is which. Can anybody give ma a clue please. At this time of the year one takes off better than the other and then the slower one catches up later on.
When harvesting I just pool them together approx half of each but I now want to experiment (after this year's harvest) with one or the other and want to know what I am using.
BTW the mixture of hops works OK.
TIA NitroJim

You should be able to do it just on taste, but Fuggles has green bines with red leaf-stalks, the Goldings family usually have green bines with red pinstripes.
They're only East Kent Goldings if they're grown in Kent east of the M20, it's a legally-protected designation for where they're grown, in the same way as Jersey Royal potatoes (or sort-of like Champagne and Parmesan).

Thanks NB. They were sold to me as EKG by a reputable hop specialist. I will from now on refer to them as just Goldings.

Don't worry about it, it's a widespread misunderstanding as the EKG branding is so strong. The hardcore suppliers like A-Plus and Essentially will be able to supply named clones within the Golding family - Ed Wray explains some of the background (with an update).
Doesn't help that Essentially then puts EKG in brackets after some of the names, although being based near Canterbury they can legitimately say that all their Goldings are East Kent ones!

West of the Medway they would be `East Kentish Golding`hops...I believe theres an old saying relating to men born east and west of the river the east being men from Kent and those from the west being Kentish men.

Men of Kent not Men from Kent - and west of the Medway you're out of East Kent and into Mid Kent.
And AIUI the Medway isn't quite the boundary for Kentish/of, it's close enough for outsiders though. I suspect it's something to do with where the boundary fell between the Jutes and Saxons but I'm not sure.

I heard the story from a National Holidays bus driver a few year ago en route to Bruges!!!!
Those bus drivers can tell a tale or two.As an outsider its all Kentish to me.
North Shields South shields.I live in County Durham. When i go south i`m thought of as a geordie but i ain`t.
Theres an excellent story on the geordie accent by Ditch within the topic unusual pub names.
That story starts when he stops and asks for directions at a certain river....its hilarious if you have time give it a read.
