Alpha acid analysis

Post by brewboy4 » Wed Sep 22, 2021 5:11 pm

Would anyone be interested in getting there homegrown hops analysed for alpha acids ? I managed to get a lab to carry out the analysis for a reasonable cost approx £10. We would need roughly 50 samples which are dried and vacuums packed to make it cost effective. Let me know if you are Interested .

How large a sample is needed?

I've harvested and dried my first year's hops:
- 74g Challenger
- 280g Cascade
- 180g Prima Donna (First Gold) - these were not mine, but were donated "wet" by a relative who grew them on his allotment. He takes payment in beer.
Fermenting: Sunshine Marmalade
Conditioning: Festbier, Helles Bock
Drinking: Smoky, lager beer, Irish Export Stout, Hazelweiss 2023:2, Cascade APA (homegrown hops), Orval clone, Impy stout, Duvel clone, Conestoga (American Barley wine)
Planning: Kozel dark (ish), Simmonds Bitter, and more!

Defo interested in this although does it mean getting a single result across all samples you collect?

I ask because I'm growing in North Yorkshire - not a renown hop growing region, hence would expect a difference in AA purely based on my geographic location.

This year has been an odd one for me hop wise.

I grow Cascade, Fuggles, Northdown and First Gold (Prima Donna) plus Styrian Golding and Santiam that were presents. I didn't use last years (small) harvest of Santiam so haven't even picked it this year. My main First Gold have been a major let down and don't look well (last years primary hop) so haven't picked those either. An unintentional left over rhizome from when I had to move the main plant 2 years ago has taken well so hopefully will replace the 'parent' next year. Again, haven't harvested it as it has grown through a now dead tree and masks the neighbours house.

I had over 1kg dried weight off the First Gold last year so a big loss.

Usually the main croppers come in roughly at the same time but this year Northdown matured first followed by the Fuggles and then Cascade some 2 weeks after. All produced a lower crop than last year with the dried (30% of 'wet') weight coming in at:

Fuggles - 425g
Northdown - 1025g
Cascade - 1150g

I'm on jollies for at least 1 week - hopefully 2 from tomorrow (1st time away since September 2019!!!!!) but will keep an eye on this as best I can but please keep me in the loop.

It’s looking around end of October so don’t worry about timing . You will get a result back for each sample you send . You can send as many samples as you like , cost is looking at £10 per sample ( if we get 50 samples ) .

Just let me know how many samples and I will be in touch .

If you get the 50, I'll send 2 samples (Cascade and Prima Donna).

PM me the details of where to send and when.

If my hops didnt get mildew I would have taken you up on that. Maybe do a cross post on the other popular UK forum and maybe uk homebrewing scenes on FB and reddit, might get enough people interested then?
