Hrlp! Rehydrated yeast for first time and it doesn't seem

Post by SquireKnott » Sun Aug 24, 2014 9:43 pm

To be working.

Warm boiled water in a jar, stirred in yeast, left 15 mins, put a teaspoon of malt extract in (from the kit I'm doing), covered and left awaiting it to start frothing after half an hour.

After an hour now and nothing had happened.

Help!

Firstly, rehydrating is just that, it should be done with water only and for about 30 mins, you are not looking to start fermentation.

When you say warm, what was the temp? What yeast is it?

Yep as joe says - you shouldn't add anything but water and you shouldn't see much apart from a Yeats, milky slurry form from the dry yeast. Having said that the malt extract won't have hurt it much at all (depending on how much water you used). Just chuck it in - it'll be fine.

you wanna wait until you've started chilling before you rehydrate it, because it needs to be pitched asap. You don't wanna rehydrate it and leave it lying around for hours.

If its nottingham they have instructions on rehydration (i imagine the same goes for all dry yeast): you want to sprinkle the dry yeast onto 10x its weight sterilised water at 30-35C. do not use wort distilled or reverse osmosis water. do not stir. leave undisturbed for 15 minutes, then stir to suspend yeast completely and leave for 5 more minutes. Adjust the temperature to that of the wort and pitch without delay.

Yes, I agree with all that. When I rehydrate S-04 I do it in about 50-100ml of room temp (previously boiled) water. Swirl gently to get it all wet. Leave 15 mins then pitch the lot.
Never had a problem with it.
Good luck.
Bill.
