Yeast Nutrient

Do you use yeast nutrient? I got myself a tube of WLN1000, and was curious at what stage people add it to the brew. Do you add it in the copper near flame out? do you add it into the FV when you pitch the yeast? What do you do?

Yeast gets all it needs from a good All Grain malt wort so is unnecessary. However, if yo are making starters with a yeast that has been stored a long time or from a slant for example it can really help the yeast to revive. I use it when boiling the DME.

Its heat stable isn't it? My understanding is it is mostly zinc. So presumably it could be added to the starter pre boil?

I use this very same nutrient and I add it during the last 5 minutes of the boil.

A well constructed wort should give the yeast all it needs.

I use it for yeast recovery, for example, when a slant is being grown up to pitchable amounts or where a yeast has been top cropped and stored in the fridge for a week or more.

I agree too
, after just using DME to culture yeast from a bottle conditioned ale, then trying another bottle with a bit of yeast nutrient in the DME, the result was quicker and better, ie more yeast cake.
