I've had washed yeast that was still viable after 6months or even 9months, however 12month old samples did not revive in a starter.
Likely it depends on the yeast strain and other factors, but you should be right for 6 months at least.

greenxpaddy wrote:Mr Malty says that your slurry is 50% viable. Best practice is to use a small amount of the slurry to step up from leaving the large quantity of dead cells in the jar. Keep stepping up until you have enough to pitch. For a standard size batch 19L you could use only 10ml of your thick slurry in a starter to get there - if using a stirplate. If not use twice the amount.
I used mr malty calculator and under the slurry tab, I got only 10% viability when I input harvest date at exactly 2 mths ago... Am I doing it right since u get 50%

You're right - I was looking at the wrong tab...in which case you'd be best to do a two step starter

Hmm at 10% viable yeast, I wonder if it's still ok to propagate and get good yeast or just buy a new pack... 10g into a 100ml starter n step up from there to 1.5l with stirplate?

I would have no hesitation in doing that over buying new. amazing how the bleeders multiply. My slant from Tuesday is now a mass of yeast cells settling out in the fridge. I must have a good 75ml I reckon

Many thanks wolfy, am about to do my first BIAB but was a bit concerned about the price of liquid yeast, if you can get 4 or 5 goes from 1 batch then buying wyeast isn't a problem.

Can any tell me if Deionized Water is okay for yeast rinsing? I can't get Distilled locally but have a gallon on deionized? I know they are produced very differently to each other and wondered if the production method of deionized water would mean I would be best boiling it first?

Cheers all,

Tap water seems to work OK for me!

I would recommend not to use deionized water, that's not so good for the yeast cells. Tap water is better.

I thought I'd read that somewhere but wasn't sure. Thanks for the reply.

I'd certainly recommend boiling any water you're going to use for rinsing.
Cheers
