Well, I put my first starter on last night, a Wyeast Bavarian Lager. 2L starter, in a 2L Erlenmeyer flask - with what looked like a lot of head space. Dear lord did this thing take off, like a rocket. Gave it a little shake to get some more oxygen in it this morning and it foamed right out the top and went everywhere.
Cleaned/sanitised the top again, and put some new foil on top... Is this sort of activity normal? I wasn't quite expecting this :-\ Especially as the yeast is a few months old, according to all the calculators I could find there should be less than half of it left in the packet when I used it.
First starter... Dear lord!
Re: First starter... Dear lord!
I do a 1.5L starter in a 2L flask. Also, the last time it was on a stir plate and this helps release the CO2. But I have no experience of the Bavarian lager yeast so even then it might still make a mess.
