Yeast starter has lots of sediment
Yeast starter has lots of sediment
I put on my first year starter yesterday using white labs wlp007 yeast and a home made stir plate. All seemed well but I've just checked it almost 24 hours in and it appears to have lots of clumpy sediment. Is this normal? It still smells like yeast!
Re: Yeast starter has lots of sediment
Turn the stir plate off now. Assuming all the big clumps settle promptly, that's almost certainly the nice yeast that you've grown. I once grew a flask full of bacterial jelly in a failed bottle culturing attempt, but I don't think you will have done that in 24hrs, so it's probably all the good stuff there. Would be easier to see if it were not stirring.

Turned off the stir plate and it settled almost immediately. Apparently this is flocculation in action, not quite the same as in a brew where there is little-to-no motion to the liquid.
Re: Yeast starter has lots of sediment
It's hard to tell by the picture but I normally wait till there is no froth in the middle as it's still fermenting, normally takes 36 hours on my stir plate. Of course if you are pitching right away it's not important.
