Dry Yeast Question

Post by Uncle Joshua » Mon Apr 20, 2020 4:37 pm

I am brewing a Mangrove Jack pale ale kit which seems to have stuck. Which yeast would be best to help it restart? My options are from here...

Have you tried giving it a really good stir? That sometimes gets things going again.

Why do you think it's stuck?
I'm just here for the beer.

The gravity has stopped at around 1014. It is a Mangrove Jack pale ale kit with 500g SML and 1 kg BKE. It started at 1042.

So that's around 67% apparent attenuation for an ABV of around 3.7%.

What yeast came with the kit? If it's something like M15 Empire you shouldn't expect too much on the attenuation front - it's listed at 70-75% and can be lower depending on circumstances.

Adding another yeast in this kind of situation tends not to work very well, as all the "easy" sugar has been consumed by the first yeast and so it's hard for the second yeast to get going. Can be better just to add a bit of sugar to bump up the ABV a bit and leave it at that. Stiring it is also a good idea.

As NB says, it's probably done all it's going to do in this primary stage.

The 'easy' sugars should have taken it to about 1.011, so you're not so far off, depending how accurate your measurements are. Did you take the gravity at the start, or is the 1.042 just what Mangrove Jack said it would be?

Best bet is to cool it down to drop some of the yeast out.

Do you bottle or keg?
