Saving yeast

Post by IPA » Fri Dec 29, 2023 3:36 pm

I know That I posted this a couple of years ago but here it is again.
I have several strains of yeast that I use regularly and this is one that I saved in 2013 and it is still going strong.
WLP 037.
36 houres into the ferment remove some wort from below the krausen and put it in a bottle like this.

For safety sake you can take two bottles.
When your wort in the FV has reached the required gravity for bottling or kegging simply remove the airlock on your sample bottle and close the flip top.
store for 14 days at room temperature and then place it in the fridge. The yeast cake seen on on the bottom of the bottle will remain viable for two years and probably more.
You will never need to buy the same yeast again. Certainly for ten years

True, but where that fit on my "effort" scale?
  1. These days I'm using Crossmyloof dried yeast 90p/pack delivered if you buy ten - chuck it in!
  2. I sometimes step up the free yeast from a bottle of Proper Job or similar
  3. I've got some slants of Wyeast 1469 untouched for a couple of years
