Can you use this yeast to make wine?

Post by mrdave3000 » Sat Nov 24, 2007 5:05 pm

Hi all

I was in the middle of making up 3 demijohns of wine,

1x strawberry
1x cherry
1x grape

I just added the yeast to 2 of the demijohns when I realised that I had ran out and didnt have any left over for the 3rd one :?

Although the missus has some -

Hovis Fast Action Bread Yeast
& some
Tesco Fast Action Dried Yeast
&
Edit: also just found some Allinson Dried Active Baking Yeast

Just wondering if these can be used as I wont be able to get to the homw brew shop till around next weekend?

Anyone used bread/baking yeast?

You canuse baking yeast, but you probably won't be happy with the results.
Using baking yeast is one of the reasons that home brew got such a bad reputation during prohibition.
I'm just here for the beer.

Historically bakers and brewers co-located and used each others yeast. Bread yeast may not flocculate as well as brewing yeast but it will certainly do the job.

my neighbour used tesco's yeast to make some damson wine It cleared out very well and the results were pretty tasty (as well as alcoholic) . I would go for it if it's not to late.
