After years of making largers, bitters and ciders with a reasonable success rate (well drinkable anyway) I decided to give a 5L alcotec kit a go as a change
The problem I have is I dont realy know much about this kind of kit or what its ment to do its been going now for about 9 days and it seems to have slowed so much its nearly stoped
theres was very little airlock activity so I chanced a peek to see what it was looking like
the top dosent seem to have much going on apart from the odd spot of foam here and there I then noticed that it had a sort of "pickled egg" kind of smell and looked milky
I also got a grav reading while i was at it just to see and it was 1.004
Im guessing its gone to pot or is it ment to smell like a haywards pickled egg factory?
I thought id better check before I throw the lot and start over (im just glad I didnt get the 5gal kit even if it is doing what its ment to im not sure i want to drink it)

mmm after a second opinion I would say it smells more eggy than vinegary infact my freind dosent think it smells of vinegar at all (must just be me)
but it tastes like a not wholly unpleasent cheap strong alcoholic drink, no hint of egg or vinegar in the taste at all
do these turbo yeasts often give off a sulphurous smell?

If it's a spirit base kit you are not actually meant to drink that you use it as the base to distil spirits.
We don't discus this here.
But if we did, you'd use that as a base for your reflux still(perfectly legal in NZ-i have one) and could produce a quantity of 90% spirit.
Please don't drink it, unless you like being blind.

its not that kind of kit sorry I should have mentioned its a base for adding essences, I know they are not great and are not ment to taste wonderfull but I wanted to give it a go to see how it differs from beer kits and turbo brews I am used to makingMartin the fish wrote:Please don't drink it, unless you like being blind.
