cloudy tc

Post by sam c » Sat Dec 20, 2008 2:14 pm

took a reading of 1.000 on my tc today(og 1.056) gonna take another tomorrow to see if its ready to bottle. thing is that its really cloudy. i acnt really see any sediment at the bottom of the dj, it just seems like its all mixed in together. i would quite like it to be clear or clearer. do you think i should rack it off into another dj and leave for a bit to clear? if so then how long? or will it clear a bit when its bottled? also i had a little taste and it was nice but had a slight strange flavour to it. hope its not infected!! the taste is hard to explain but without sounding like an idiot it is like quite an alcoholic taste.not like vinigar or anything like that. what do you think?

According to your Og and FG readings I make it about 8% so yes it probrably is alcohol your tasting :D

As for the cloudiness it should clear if you leave it some where cooler for a while so it stops fermenting. All my TC is crystal clear now after about 3 weeks in a pet bottle, and it looked like custard to start with..

ok, thanks for that reply. will probally bottle it tomorrow then and let it clear in a cool place, fridge ok?
i gathered it was around 7.3% so know theres lots of alcohol in there, its just that it doesnt taste like alcohol would do in say a normall strong cider. dont know its hard to explain. from what you said sounds like it is fine. thanks again

The strange taste is probably dead yeast, wait for it to clear it should improve. Remember most of the cloudiness is the by product of fermentation and will also be full of co2.

thanks again everyone. bottled it today as i had the same reading again-1.000.primed it with another carton of juice and leaving it in the warm for a few days then moving to a cooler place for a few weeks. had a little taster and all is well. taste better than it did yesterday which i am quite suprised at, also it is already a bit clearer too.
