Bentonite - How do you do yours?

Post by WishboneBrewery » Tue Jan 06, 2009 7:51 pm

The Youngs Bentonite instructions make a ball of Clay that sticks to your teaspoon, I've tried crushing up the bentonite into a finer powder first and it still makes the Mud pie at the end of the spoon!

So, this time I tried some just boiled water and got a clay ball again, so stirred lots then microwaved it a few seconds and stirred it again then left it for quarter of an hour... Its still got a Clay ball in it but at least the water is thicker now so I dumped it in the DJ minus the Mud pie. =D>

There has to be a method that mixes this stuff up better than I'm managing... anyone?

taa :)

Its not the easiest stuff to mix! Perseverence is the key here, you have to keep stirring until it has all dissolved in the water. I konw that this is easier said than done from my own experiences with it!

^^ This 'Perseverence' you mention, can i get it in a bottle from the home brew shop? ;)

I actually considered putting it in the Electric Wet 'n Dry Spice Grinder I got for christmas! That would be a bad idea i think.

I've used it a couple of times in mead, I just sprinkled it straight into the demijohn... Seemed to dissolve fine after a few days with a couple of swirls, and certainly helps fermentation and settling/clearing.

PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE... and all that cr*p lol

i had the same problems for a while, until (not in the bath) i had a urika moment. i put the bentonite into a cup with water. left it to sit while i siphoned etc etc etc. when i came back to it the whole cup was a cloudy mess. with no lunpy bits. so before you sdanitise etc, put the bentoite in the cup with water and leave it the time it takes you to rack off, have a cup of tea and a moke, then stick it in your chosen bru.
