Nettle and gorse beer

Post by jimny14 » Mon May 17, 2010 8:36 pm

Ok, so here's my basic thought. Go n gather a load of gorse flowers, and a similar amount, maybe a little less, of nettle. Then like an extract brew boil it up for maybe 45 mins for the nettles n about 15 mins for the flowers, using them like bittering and late hops, then use probably half n 2/3 medium dme n 1/3 bke for the fermentables. Looking for a light summer brew, something light n quaffable, trying to aim for about 4% ish. Haven't finalised a recipe yet any input on that would be appreciated. I've got plenty access to both young nettles n gorse.

Just for anyone thats interested this has been put on this afternoon. The recipe is as follows.

2x carrier bags of nettle tops
1x carrier bag of gorse flowers
1kg medium dme
1kg light dme
500g bke

Did a one hour boil of the nettles adding the flowers at the last 10-15mins, then turned it off n left it for 10 mins. Chucked everything in the fv, made it up to SG1040. Gonna leave it a week or so, give it a taste n see if it needs anything. Might add some elderflower to give it some aroma. Hoping to try n do a brew without hops, but we'll see how it turns out.
