I was at the bakers supermarket and found 1kg bags of glucose syrup on the cheap. Is glucose fermentable or not?
What would it do to a brew?

AFAIK, Glucose is brewing sugar and certainly fermentable. I expect it can be used to give added fermentables and thus strength without imparting any particular flavour to a brew.

Hi Lee, I work for a company that makes glucose syrup for the food and brewing industry and yes - it is fermentable. Are you sure it was syrup though? The supermarkets usually sell bags of dextrose powder.

I use it in the same way you would use sugar. Don't add more than 10 - 15% of the fermentables in beer. It will increase %ABV but will also reduce the body, which you might want in a strong brew, but not in beers under say 4.5% ABV. It will give you a cleaner ferment than sugar but don't use too much.

If it was syrup you bought then it's usually about 75% dextrose (25% water). If it was powder or crystals then it will be dextrose. I usually use maltose, which is like two dextrose molecules stuck together. The yeasties like it better because that's the sugar we extract from the malt. Fortunately though I don't have to buy mine from the supermarket.

Yes,I'm sure it was syrup. It comes in a bag, clear, soft, gel like stuff without colour. Looks kind of like a breast implant,ha ha.
