which juice for a tc?
Re: which juice for a tc?
Once you have pitched the yeast you should see some activity from 2hrs - 24 hrs
It all depends on wort (brew)temperature and the yeast.
As you can see from my pic, I have 1 of my FV's wrapped in a foam blanket to help retain the heat and insulate it from the cold.
(camping shop bed roll, or, carpet shop foam underlay)

22 hours in and nothing much is happening. All the apple, pulp and bigger bits, are on top and the liquid is very cloudy.Should it froth?
Re: which juice for a tc?
Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't, and if its going cloudy something is happening.
Did you give it a good old shake before you threw in the yeast to airate the brew? If not, do it now.

Re: which juice for a tc?
It'll take a while to clear in your KK but it does produce a cracking cider if allowed to mellow for a few weeks. I left mine in the keg for about a month and it was as good as any shop bought cider, imo.
Re: which juice for a tc?
I know i am sad
,but i have just had another look. The bottom 6 inch of the vessel is now clear-ish and the same colour as strong tea.The top 7-8 inch(mans measurements
) is very very cloudy and butterscotch colour. The top 1 inch is apple pulp. There is deffinatley movement in this top 1 inch.

Re: which juice for a tc?
Sounds like my first attempt terrier, it was rice whisky, in a stainless pan, so couldn't see the layers, but the top with raisins floating on just a gentle bubbling.
Dunno if it's the done thing with tc, but I gave it a good stir first couple of days.
Hope it turns out OK mate, mine first attempt's drinkable now, but gonnna leave it a few more days.

Re: which juice for a tc?
40 hours in and it is bubbling every second through the air lock. The entire thing is now the butterscotch colour with lots of visible bubbles coming up from the flat bit of the vessel below the handle. When do i add the 3 litres of juice i have left ?
Re: which juice for a tc?
Give it till tommorrow to be sure, then throw the rest of the juice in.
Happy brewing!

Re: which juice for a tc?
Can i leave adding the extra 3 litres untill it is all done and gone in the keg?.It is still a going mad in the fv from saturday?
Re: which juice for a tc?
You'll need to add it in the FV, not the keg or it will continue to ferment in the keg, make the keg too pressurised and there will be a lot of sediment.
As long as you have room in the FV get it in there.

Re: which juice for a tc?
I put the remaining 3 litres in last night. The brew is still bubbling like mad and the cloudy butterscotch colour. Do i now wait untill it looks like tea like it did at the start of the process?. How much brewing sugar should i add to the keg when it goes in there?. Many thanks for your help.Geezah wrote:You'll need to add it in the FV, not the keg or it will continue to ferment in the keg, make the keg too pressurised and there will be a lot of sediment.

Re: which juice for a tc?
yeah, just sit tight for 5-7 days then check the activity / hydrometer reading.
Once its down to 1000 I generally rack it off in to a clean fv... let it sit a couple of days to let some of the yeast drop out of it, then bottle it up.
1tsp of sugar per 500ml bottle.

Re: which juice for a tc?
If I replaced all the apple juice in a TC recipe with guava juice, would it be right to call the end product a Cider?!
I been looking it up on google and different websites say different things:
Some say cider is only apples
Some any fruit is cider
Some people get so angry when perry is referred to as "pear cider"!
So to answer your question and not highjack ur thread I guess it all depends on your definition of what cider actually is!

Re: which juice for a tc?
I haved siphoned it into the kk today after a week in the fv. I added 100 grammes of brewing sugar to the kk. I poured a glass full, whilst siphoning, to test and it was very sharp with not much apple taste. My mrs said it was vinigary ?.
