Beaverdale California White
Beaverdale California White
Hi all, I have made a few of these but the last three have caused me problems. Once fermentation is over and finings etc added it clears fairly quickley but a fluffy white loose deposit settles on top of the yeast at the bottom 0f my jar. No matter how careful it gets picked up by the syphon tube and I end up racking a second time and might only get as little as 4 bottles after what is lost. Would I be better not adding finings and let it clear naturally ? Any one else had this problem. All other makes I have done have just left a firm deposit of yeast behind
Re: Beaverdale California White
I brew a lot of wine kits, Kenridge classic are my favourite, if I am not in a rush I just add the metabisulphite and don't bother with the potassium sorbate and isoclear, leave in a cool place for a few days and it clears perfectly well, I have had a few kits that leave the fluffy white residue but I brew 30 bottle kits so the slight loss isn't a problem but if you are doing the 6 bottle kits I would do exactly what I have described above to save loss.
Re: Beaverdale California White
thanks for that . I think I will go along those lines. Leave out the sachets supplied and add a campden tablet and let it clear on its own in good time.

Just add the potassium metabisuphite that is supplied instead of campden tabs, no point wasting it.brewjohn wrote:thanks for that . I think I will go along those lines. Leave out the sachets supplied and add a campden tablet and let it clear on its own in good time.
Re: Beaverdale California White
is there a problem with the white bits?
I brewed some pedo greacio recently and that has some quite big bits in the bottom, when i pour it, i filter it with a kleanx tissue!
Im not dead yet.

No problem with them and the wine tastes fine. Its just they start to come up the syphon pipe when i end up leaving too much behind if i want a clear wine.I will try it with out finings next as I believe they do give a loose fluffy deposit. if that fails will invest in a filter.( I had a Boots one years ago but someone threw it out when I packed up brewing for a few years !!) Just done a Beaverdale barolo and this has a nice solid yeast pan at the bottom and was easy to syphon.

I find that youngs wine finings in the orange packet with part a and part b are really good at clearing wine vary quickly, I always have some in stock just in case. Under a quid a pack too.brewjohn wrote:No problem with them and the wine tastes fine.
