TC in a plastic keg?
TC in a plastic keg?
Been making TC on & off for ages now, but only ever used PET bottles. Been thinking of making a bigger batch soon though, and just banging it into my keg. Does anyone else use a keg, and if so do you add sugar to the keg and if so how much?
Re: TC in a plastic keg?
If you like your TC fizzy I would stick to
PET bottles plastic kegs vent pressure
at about 10 psi so will not give a very
high level of carbonation. It's down to
personal preference I guess. I remember
priming a Roto Keg with about 85g of sugar.
Hope this helps.

I use the budget barrel all the time, I don't carbonate the cider though, I just pressurise it with S30 to serve it.

Re: TC in a plastic keg?
Hi
I've used budget kegs with 100 - 120 g of sugar per 5 gal.
This is OK to dispense for 50-70% of barrel and I have S30 valve to help the rest out.
Very easy and saves on bottling!

What gas system do you have on the keg? If you use sugar it will be fizzy and I find it changes the flavour profile massively, but yes you can use sugar, this will only work for about half the contents of the keg however and you will need something to push the beer out at that point.

+1 to above.EoinMag wrote:If you use sugar it will be fizzy and I find it changes the flavour profile massively, but yes you can use sugar, this will only work for about half the contents of the keg however and you will need something to push the beer out at that point.
Once the gas generated by the sugar runs out, the cider will only come out if something replaces it.
Either (preferably) from CO2 from a s30 valve at the top or similar CO2 system,
OR, (what you don't want) from air coming in from the tap.
Letting air in is OK if you are drinking rest of barrel that day or so, like at a party, but within a short time the air is likely to oxidise the cider and introduce Acetobacter to give you a barrel of cider-vinegar.

Right i see. I have only ever used the barrel once, for a coopers stout and it was drunk very quickly. I ahve never used CO2 S30, so its all new to me. Thanks for the advice guys, its a real help.

So does it have a gas system with it? Is there a threaded brass setup on the top?

Ok well it's going to be one of two sorts, either it has a pin inside it that will burst a small 8g cylinder of gas and discharge all at once, or it will have just a hole in the middle and no pin (S30).
If it's the first type you'd need a holder and some cartridges such as:

If it's S30 which is a lot better as it's reusable and not one way you'll need an S30 cylinder such as:

EIther way, once you get to half way you'll need something to push it out or open the lid and let it just come out under gravity, but then you had better drink it in a day or two as it will start to sour.
