Alcotec kits

Post by Gordonmull » Tue Jul 19, 2011 9:07 pm

Hi folks

I've got an alcotec kit on the go, prepares as per kit instructions. Now, going by said instructions no aging time is mentioned!?

Geezah, I know you've done these babies before - how long would you leave to age before drinking? Anyone having any tips to offer too would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

I would say that if it wasn't filtered a few times then there would be some right nasty flavours comming from it (based upon a sip I had untreated) I dont think ageing would help much.

Using charcoal to filter it removes all the 'milky' discolouring and removes a lot of the nasty flavours produced by the turbo yeast, it's not something you could really mask with a flavouring if you didnt filter it.

I found using dextrose powder rather than white sugar helps it clear up nicely even without the help of carcoal.... but i guess its a bit late now for that :$

Cheers Geezah. Not possessing the means to treat the resulting ferment through a "concentration/dilution process" I can't really clean it up that way but I know a man who could, if I could afford the petrol. Does the charcoal that comes with the kit do a good enough job, or do you mean a dedicated carbon filter, e.g. for an aquarium or something?

Avtovaz, these aren't that dear when you compare the cost to liqueurs from the shops. £8.70 I paid for the 5L kit (http://www.thethriftyshopper.co.uk/brew ... .aspx.aspx) and £2.46 for the essence, of which a variety are available (http://www.thethriftyshopper.co.uk/Spir ... ueurs.aspx). The essence will do 15L according to the bottle, but it's early days yet, so we'll see. It requires 1.6kg of sugar according to the instructions. So I'm hoping for 6 bottles of peach schnapps for wifey-o for less than 1 from the shop. By the sounds of things she's going to be holding her nose to drink it though!!

Second2none, cheers for the dextrose tip. Alas, as a result of this new-found information a repeat of the experiment will now be neccessary. Shame!

The kit charcoal does the job well.

I've edited out references to distillation, which is illegal in the UK without a licence.

And from what we've seen in the news not too long ago, that's not a bad thing!

Someone get their kit confiscated then? I'm surprised HMRC have got the manpower to spare what with all that fending off of illegal immigrants!

Not much of a news hound so just had a look at this one one. Part of me does feel sorry for guys and their families but another part slaps my forehead. They had a still in a lock-up!? They actually conducted a process that inherently involves flammable vapours in a confined space? I never really agreed with the laws on the not to be mentioned process, on account of being a western islander, but I'm actually starting to see the point now. Sod the tax money, we must make sure our idiots survive to breed.
