Crabbies Alcoholic Ginger Ale/Beer clones ?

Post by fatbloke » Sun Jul 31, 2011 3:43 pm

Does anyone have a recipe for a Crabbies Alcoholic Ginger Ale/Beer type clone ?

Only because I actually tried some last week as it was on offer at the Waitrose in Worthing..... and I'm finding it, very much, to "my taste" \:D/   :flip:

Try the Coopers ginger beer kit. I've just started drinking one. It's quite sweet, and not too gingery. It's too sweet for me, but the mothership likes it. Crabbies is too sweet for me too, so they're probably about right. As long as you don't mind it cloudy, it's all good.

Ok, I'll look out one of those kits - ha! I'll probably increase the ginger some, as my preference is for "the hotter, the better".......

I'd love to do an all grain ginger ale. I manged to find some cheap ginger in asda's frozen exotic food section, much cheaper than fresh! I find the crabbies far too sweet, probably why they serve it so cold. An all grain guesstimate would be welcome!

Well don't forget, they also make "ginger wine", much like the Stones brand one. So I suspect it's made to reflect a similar flavour, rather than actually tasting like some sort of beer/ale/etc etc.

I quite enjoy it, but I also like other brands of non-alcoholic ginger ale. In fact, I can't think of a reason why it's called ale or beer, other than for historical reasons........

Others might know better though......

I did a cheap beer kit a while ago and chucked in a load of fresh ginger and a bit of ground ginger. Didn't come out that gingery but probably due to the amount of ginger thrown in.

Try a basic ale recipe and add a load of ginger to the boil then dry hop with some fresh and or ground ginger during fermentation.
