Ginger (mix) recipe ?

Tried just ginger and sugar, it's just drinkable but really needs something else(it's a bit like ginery/lemonade, really masks the alcholol well though), was thinking or adding some anise or cloves or maybe even some DME, i like that anise taste in mulled wine for ex. Any ideas?
