The best TC I've done so far (I'm not yet at the malic-acid-and-age-6-months level) used Suma apple concentrate. It makes the brew a little more expensive and a little stronger but it was that much better than my standard TCs I just went to order more. I did this recipe:
500ml bottle Suma apple concentrate, 500ml cranberry, 500ml strong tea, 1l value AJ, pectolase, nutrient, Young's cider yeast, make up to 1gallon with water.
This comes out about 6.4% and wonderfully appley. Using 2l value AJ is also good but it needs a bit longer in the bottle and is a getting-silly 7.5%
ANYWAY...
The concentrate is normally £3.35 a bottle. I just ordered a full pack of 6 from my local wholefood shop and they gave me a 10% discount, got it down to £3.015/bottle. They also pointed out that the concentrate can be bought in 5l bottles for less than £29, a further saving. I didn't go for that this time as I don't normally make /that/ much TC and so wondered about its shelf life once opened - mailing Suma about that next. But it'd be ideal for people who normally do 5 or 10 gallon batches.
