Looking around I see plastic demijohns prices at £3-4 each, but my local Tesco is selling 5L bottles of water at £1.05 - i.e. more convenient and cheaper than my local HB shop which is miles away. Now since I have a 30L wine kit needing somewhere to mature, I'm wondering how suitable the water bottles are. I appreciate that not all plastic is equal so they might not be suitable, so does anybody out there have some good advice?

Re: Supermarket waterbottles for wine storage?
They are absolutely fine. They are only really much use for one or 2 brews though as the ridges in the plastic make them hard to clean.
Re: Supermarket waterbottles for wine storage?
I have about 8 5l plastic water bottles that I use for fermenting/racking/ageing wine in that some are comming up for nearly 2 years old now.
I only dissguard them when the handles are about to snap.

Although dont forget that the plastic is air permeable so dont age your wine next to the onion shelf.

Thanks everybody.
Sauvignon Blanc (Beaverdale) now in 5l containers under the stairs - where there are no onions. The plan was to mature it until Christmas, but having sampled a little I really doubt that will happen! I have to say I'm impressed with the Beaverdale SB so far.
Maybe a red next.
