Yes I do often go thru' Heysham when I use the ferry & take the car (otherwise foot passanger to Liverpool for connecting trains etc. or flying are more appealing options) ... do they have a website with a map/locator on it?

http://www.atkinsonsteaandcoffee.co.uk/ is the site

Location bit (and history since establishment in 1837, current shop 1901) at http://www.atkinsonsteaandcoffee.co.uk/page.php?Page=35

As you'll be going so near you'll LOVE it - site has a good series of pics but it's the smell and atmosphere and sheer love of coffee when you;re in that make it so special.

Tried my first packet from Has Bean 'Guatamala El Bosque'.

Tried it first in my french press with my usual course grind and it tasted like cardboard :? almost didn't finish it.

Tried it next in the Gaggia, after a bit of fiddling with the grind, amount of coffee and tamp. Wow, never seen so much crema. Thick, golden brown and creamy. Needed a double shot for a single small mug (Americano). A very mellow tasting cup of coffee, sweet and caramel-ly.

I hate all that F'ing about to find what tastes good !

Anyone know what was causing the cardboard flavour ? A grind issue maybe ? The grind setting I normally use produces a very nice cup of coffee with the J Sainsbury Colombian I usually use.

Anyone made an espresso stout? Want recipe and tips - scheming on next parti-gyle being a HUGE Imperial Stout followed by a coffee stout with second runnings.

Dark Star Espresso Stout says they chuck some beans in the copper  everything else says to add espresso shot or similar to the secondary... Anyone got experience?

I drink a drop or two of espresso.

I have a Gaggia Coffee Deluxe machine (see the picture a page or two back. I bought a good cone burr grinder recently, the name of which escapes me at the moment, which is fantastic once you get the grind dialled in and I use Algerian Coffee Stores Velluto Nero which is bloody lovely.

As has been posted earlier there are so very obsessive coffee sites out there although, to be honest, I now find that I sometimes have to change the grind as the weather changes. OMG I am turning into a coffe nerd! Aaaaaarggghhhh!

I've been getting back into using my Gaggia, actually my Krups grinder works very well. With fresh beans I always get a massive layer of crema. Turning into a bit of a junkie, averaging about 3 double espressos a day

This comforts me: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/5071874.stm

I had my San Remo serviced yesterday, we've been shut for a couple of weeks now and i've really missed it. I had a single shot (Origin Triple Certified). I was in heaven. I'm off to Cuba on holiday for the next two weeks, they have seriously rich coffee. I'm hoping to bring back some beans for the shop. It will make up for their beer, its not bad....just fizzy lager stuff.
I really hope theres a proper espresso machine, the smell alone would be enough to make me smile!

I always enjoy a good cupof Coffee in the morning and generally go through the day on Tea. I happened across this site last year and found more choice than I'll ever need. Good thing as well is that most of it is organic (and all that other bo**ocks.) It's only the organic bit I'm interested in.

I can seriously recommend the chocolate tea they have, really nice aroma but still a tea drink.

Cheers Jase

I use Miles' of Devon coffee beans that go straight into my Gaggia grinder then into my Bialetti espresso maker. Job done! Maybe froth my milk if i'm feeling camp. LOL.

There's a cool little post office/village shop near where I work on the border of Somerset that stocks about 6 different types of Miles' beans, I go in there, choose what I want and they weigh them out for me. Bit like a sweet shop! £1.15 per 100g

Well I don't know about them "devon coffee beans" Roy, but well done for mentioning what IMO is about the only way to make coffee.

Unless you have a large commercial machine, which, lets face it, most of us can't afford, all you really need to do is to look to the nation that regularly makes the best Coffee in Europe i.e. Italy. Restaurants will have large commercial machines, so what's the next best thing ? How about what Roy mentioned? A "Bialetti" type stove top coffee/espresso maker ? Quite quick, makes a good strong coffee, available in various sizes (espresso cup/2 floz multiples).

S'wot I use. Along with Lavazza Gold (nearest "proper" coffee place is too much hassle to get to). You can always microwave the milk and then bang it with one of those little "frothing blenders". Works a treat.

Unaddressed point though. In Italy, no self respecting coffee drinker will take a cappuccino after 11am. They wouldn't entertain drip machines (often goes bitter after a while on the hot plate and is weak as piss anyway - parallels with americans ?????) and "french press"/cafetiere makers are pretty much the same as drip makers - weak as piss and for mug punters...... They certainly wouldn't use any device (nespresso, tassimo etc) where you have to buy the coffee in special little "pod things" - which, lets face it, are only there so the makers can "add value" to the coffee and make convenience (laziness???) a selling point with their fancy "mug punter" adverts.....

Personally, when and if I can get whole beans I just go for a mix of dark roast "Continental" beans and Mocha. 50/50 medium to fine ground. It will work with most types of maker.......

But then again, what about Turkish/Arabic coffee ? Strong as hell, sweet as f**k and absolutely delicious. I've got a small copper "Ibrik" but don't make it often as it can take a while i.e. the number of times it's reboiled to make it as strong as possible. Don't forget if you did make some then it's manners to offer the "crema" part to your guest. Just remember, that there's usually a healthy(?????) amount of grounds at the bottom......

If you must drink "instant", then you get what you pay for...... don't let the f*****g adverts guide you. Taste it and see. IMO, the best one is the Nestle (food nazis) "Alta Rica".....

It really annoys me in my shop that so many brits drink Latte (annoyingly pronounced the American way with the extended strangulated vowels, grr: Laaaaaaahhhhhhhtayyyyyyyyy). I do some serious good coffee and they want warm milk on it? Ah well they are the customers!
Just starting to serve 'seasonal' byOrigin Coffee, he first commercially roasted coffee in Cornwall. Its a beaut, but pricey!

In bristol they pronounce latte as 'latty' sounds very funny!

I got my Gaggia grinder brand new from a charity shop for £5 absolute bargain I must say. I'm no coffee conneissure (sp) but I do enjoy a good (IMO) cup of coffee! Lavazza espresso beans are good as are the local beans I get from Miles' coffee.

The Bialetti is perfect, if I have mates over I ram it full of coffee and top the espresso up with hot water or if i'm on my own then I put in 2.5 tsp and let the water do the diluting so I don't have to add any more water.

What espresso machines are people using here? Anybody recommend a good one?

Any of the Gaggia ones are a good investment Dave. A good grinder is essential and I would recommend splashing out on one before you get an espresso machine. Rocky Rancillio and Mazzer Mini are two well regarded home grinders although you might wince at the price.

I'm just using a cheapo drip filter these days, only problem is the coffee isn't hot enough and you have to gulp it down.
