sorry about the poor quality but it's too late to borrow the neighbours camera.
Well you'll want to talk to JY whilst he's online, he makes cider and calvados from scratch using traditional French methods on a pretty industrial scale... ;)

QUOTE (Daft as a Brush @ Dec 9 2005, 11:33 PM) Calvados...now youre talking :beer  :out

Turbo cider maybe better than your strongbows, dryblackthorns and woodoeckers but it falls a little short of JYs stuff.
JY's your man and he very kindly wrote an article on the main forum about his work with making cider. There are also a number of posts here. (We're always looking for articles from members on their beer making activities... (Hint, Hint! ).

Being that it's winter, I'm considering waiting for a cold spell and simply freeze distilling some cider outside and seeing how it turns out. (AFAIK it's leagl and more importantly safe to distill cider in this way)... :D

QUOTE (Daft as a Brush @ Dec 9 2005, 11:58 PM) Ahhh, by the way, it's also ilegal to freeze distill but I do have a link to a very simple and safe still if your interested, I will have to dig it out though, bear with me.
Really? B*gger!

I also have a few thoughts about how to make one using beer making kit, if I am at a loose end one day i'll get some pics together.
All pics always welcome... :D

QUOTE (Daft as a Brush @ Dec 9 2005, 11:57 PM) Forget freeze distillation, it's a waste of time, I made 25 L of20 % Vodka (just for a laugh). I froze a 2 L bottle and the whole lot turns to ice crystals making it almost impossible to extract the 'goodness'.

I'l knock up an article on my beer making activities if anyones interested, it'll probably take a while though, can't guarentee how good it will be.
Take your time on any articels DAB, but we really do like them... :D

QUOTE (Daft as a Brush @ Dec 10 2005, 12:26 AM) Jims article/web pages are great and I have learned a lot from them but there are always different ways of doing things, for instance I use a picnic cooler mash tun and a slightly differently designed boiler so i'll try and put something together that compliments what Jim has done which hopefully measures up, I remember when I was starting out I would read every article I could lay my hands on. I also enjoy building the kit, perhaps I can do something along those lines.
Your DIY posts are great DAB! Practical descriptions of building them and the problems you encountered would really help. (Soldering pipework for example might as well be tap dancing instructions in Swahili to me, as I've never done it...! ;) )

Party pooper mode 'on':

Please note that unlicensed distillation of alcohol by any method is illegal in Britain and Jim's home brew forum in no way condones etc etc. So please don't post any links or information about how to do it!

OK, turbo cider is go! Bubbling away nicely after only 30 mins :D

4L Tesco value apple juice
150g cane sugar
1 sachet champagne yeast (SB7)

Add juice + sugar to a demijohn and swosh around vigorously
Add packet of yeast to demijohn and swosh again
Add airlock and put demijohn in bathtub

Will top up with say 0.5L of apple juice after a couple of days.

That's interesting, my champagne yeast is sat quite happily at the bottom rather than top fermenting...
